The Totally Awesome Hulk, Volume 1: Cho Time Review (Greg Pak, Frank Cho)

Amadeus Cho is the Totally Awesome Hulk who’s also totally in control when he’s the big green giant - but what happened to Bruce Banner? Also an alien monster collector called Lady Hellbender wants to add Hulk to her collection while Enchantress wants to enlist Hulk to fight for her in the War of the Realms storyline currently playing out in Jason Aaron’s Thor.

Greg Pak, probably the best known Hulk writer of the modern era having written Planet Hulk and World War Hulk, returns to the character once more and his Totally Awesome Hulk is… just ok. It does feel a bit contrived as Marvel have a big diversification push going on at the moment and Cho has replaced Banner as Hulk only because he’s Korean.

The storylines themselves aren’t that interesting. Hulk punches tons of kaiju for most of the book, he fights magic monsters, and tangles with Fin Fang Foom. Meh. Frank Cho and Mike Choi’s art makes it all look great though. And the flashbacks explaining how Banner stepped out of the picture and Cho became the Hulk were kinda interesting.

Pak’s kept the talking robo drone sidekick from Mark Waid’s Indestructible Hulk run which is cool - a good idea is a good idea - with Amadeus’ sister Maddy controlling the drone. They’re both geniuses because it’s Marvel and practically everyone in a Marvel comic is a genius.

The first volume of The Totally Awesome Hulk is a good-looking one if not the most enthralling read. It’s a halfway-awesome comic!
