Give a brain-damaged octopus a bunch of X-Men action figures and get it to tell you a story with them and it’d probably be more entertaining and make more sense than Age of Apocalypse, both the original and this Secret Wars tie-in!
Set in a realm of Battleworld ruled over by En Sabah Nur, aka Apocalypse, Apocalypse’s Four Horsemen are looking for a mutant called Douglas who holds the key to something. The X-Men - various factions of them who are different but not really - are also searching for Douglas. He’s important - for REASONS!
Then, halfway through the book everyone forgets about Douglas (done). The story’s now about Apocalypse unleashing the Legacy Virus because he’s obsessed with the concept of “survival of the fittest” - any mutants who live through the virus get to (scene missing) and then a random villain shows up and everyone has to fight them!
Wow. This one is a whole bunch of crazy nonsense and not in a good way. Incoherent storytelling, zero characterisation (duuuh, this guy’s baaad, this guy’s goood), and no clue what’s happening or why - how did Apocalypse last long enough to rule anything when he’s this insane and moronic?? I’ve never thought much of Fabian Nicieza’s writing before and that view’s only reinforced after this abysmal comic.
Gerardo Sandoval’s art for the first three issues of this book is among the worst I’ve ever seen from Marvel. Busy, flat, really difficult to decipher what’s happening on the page especially in discerning between characters, all of whom have jagged edges, no sense of depth - absolutely horrendous to look at. A perfect match for the writing!
This one ties with Age of Ultron vs Marvel Zombies (what is it about “Age of…” books?) as the worst of the Secret Wars tie-ins. It’s so awful, it does the original Age of Apocalypse justice by being equally crappy and unreadable. Expect the Age of Remaindered Copies to follow!
