Ms Marvel #8 Review (G Willow Wilson, Adrian Alphona)

OH-KAY, this is my favourite comic of the week fireals! It’s got: Adrian Alphona returning to draw, Kamala teaming up with Lockjaw of the Inhumans (he’s the giant dog with the antenna on his head), a Jamie McKelvie cover, and a wicked awesome story by G Willow Wilson. What else do you need?

Medusa’s sent Lockjaw to watch over Kamala while she investigates the dangerous villain, the Inventor (she’s still not aware she’s an Inhuman, or NuHuman). She’s tracking down the locations of the missing kids who he’s been using in his machines as batteries. But after she saves another kid, one of the Inventor’s trackers leads him directly to her school…!

It probably helps that I’m a dog person that I loved this issue so much. Kamala’s overjoyed at having the giant dog Lockjaw with her even if she doesn’t know who he is - one of Black Bolt’s inner circle - but their bonding over this issue was so darling. I’m pretty sure that’s how I was when I got my first dog!

Then you’ve got the rest of this issue which hits all the notes you’d expect - her home life, her school life, her personal life - mixed in with superhero action. It’s a really well balanced issue that advances the story and her character perfectly.

Alphona’s dearly missed art is in full effect once again. It’s definitely true that you don’t know what you’ve got til its gone and when Alphona left the title, for me anyway, the series lost a bit of its light. Every page is gorgeous from the superhero action as Kamala battles a giant robot with her powers, to the simpler conversation scenes between Kamala and Lockjaw (pretty one-sided conversations admittedly!). Wonderful, wonderful art!

It’s another fantastic, fun issue in the brilliant new Ms Marvel series. Terrific art and writing all round, Ms Marvel #8 is the must-read comic of the week!
